I have a BS in Art and a Masters in Studio Art from NYU and an MSW from UConn. I have been a practicing psychotherapist and artist in the Pioneer Valley for over four decades and gratefully continue to derive enormous pleasure, purpose and meaning from both my creative and enriching pursuits.
My Monotype Collages are inspired by landscapes, cityscapes and still life forms. I utilize the colors, shapes, textures, patterns and the layering of multiple hand inked papers with different markings and degrees of transparency in order to create one of a kind impressionistic and playful compositions which can range from the abstract to the representational. I love the challenge of creating a coherent composition by arranging the variant pieces of the collage together and the spontaneity and surprises that occur during the printing process.
A Monotype, it is a "one of a kind”, “original” piece of art. It is made by inking/drawing/ and or painting on an acrylic plate that is rolled through a press . Each time the plate can be rolled with a different color/ pattern/ mark, and is wiped clean after each run through the press; hence, the images are non repeatable.
My Monotype Collages are constructed by inking/ drawing/ marking an acrylic plate which is then rolled through the press transferring the image onto a background paper. The process is then repeated with other designated papers which have different degrees of transparency. I then create a composition constructed by using pieces of the variously patterned papers.
My pastels are usually scenic and representational. I am inspired by the beauty of nature, the farms, gardens and rivers of the Valley, and the breathtaking places around the world that I have been fortunate to visit. I love revisiting the same places in different seasons to re-interrupt them using different palettes. I am constantly taking photographs, both locally and wherever I’m traveling. I love scenes that articulate how light creates patterns of shadows, and how the variations of light during the day and the seasons affect color. I am intrigued by the mystery of pathways, and though I often paint en plein air, I work with pastels in the studio.
